Born in 1909 and died in 1948, Gunnel Nyman is a Finnish designer who participated in the emergence of modern glass design in Finland. Gunnel Gustafsson studied furniture design at the Central School of Industrial Arts in Helsinki under Arttu Brummer. She graduated in 1932. At first she worked in the functionalist style, initially designing lamps and sconces from 1932 to 1936. She married Gunnar Nyman in 1936. From 1936 to 1938 she designed furniture and also started to draw for glassmakers. In the post-war period, she turned to glassmaking. She collaborates or works on order with various glassworks, including Riihimäki Karhula-Iittala and Nuutajärvi and then becomes one of the main creators of glass objects in Finland. His work is characterized by organic lines and focuses on the characteristics of the glass itself. She was awarded several times, as at the Milan Triennale in 1933, at the Paris Arts and Techniques Exhibition in 1937, and again, but posthumously, at the 9th Milan Tiennale in 1951. She died prematurely in 1948. His works are exhibited in museums around the world, such as the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, or the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris.
