Jean-Louis GRÉGOIRE (1840-1890)
Jean-Louis Grégoire was born and died in Paris. Trained with Salmson at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, he exhibited at the Salon from 1867 and became one of the first Associates of French Artists. The work, L'Allégro, is one of many groups by Grégoire that take music as their theme, others being his figure of a child Mozart, tuning his violin, and An Artist in the Seventeenth Century, also depicting a violinist. Compositionally, L'Allégro has affinities with works by Salmson, in which two characters are depicted in motion, and it is also linked to other works by Grégoire, such as La Confidence, Persée et Andromède and Helen and Paris.
