This exceptional object consists of a basin in soft Sèvres porcelain mounted in a bronze structure drawn in the mythological decorative vocabulary and more specifically in reference to Bacchus.
The oblong base rests on four straight fluted feet, the headband is molded and decorated with an added laurel frieze. High quality brand, the base which is also a spacer is covered with an elegant decoration chiseled in a rosette of acanthus leaves and vine branches, centered in a granite in picketing.
Four fauns carry the basin on a rim in a frieze of leaves and are bound with heavy garlands of flowers and fruits. The handles are two different characters, a faun and a sea woman from ancient mythology. The bronze covering of the rim of the vase is a sort of finely and deeply chiseled mold of fruits and flowers too.
The celestial blue basin is decorated with a cartouche on each side representing two women surrounded by putti and flowers. The celestial blue is covered with a very fine gold mesh.
The Sèvres mark in blue on the cover is accompanied by the date letter "O" indicating the year 1767. The series of dots is the mark of the painter Pierre Théodore Buteux (active from 1765 to 1784) and the fleur-de-lys surmounting the two The intertwining indicates an order from the royal family. We are in a great work of merchant haberdasher who designed and created the assembly of this toilet basin.
The mounting of everyday objects for emotional reasons was done, we even used bourdaloues. Each cartouche presents the portrait of two women (or of the same woman).
These are real portraits and not gender but at the time they were treated both differently for the same person and at the same time with a family resemblance (round face, large eyes), so it is difficult to determine which nobody was represented here and at the end of the reign of Louis XV.
We can think, but without certainty, of the twins Louis Elizabeth of France and Henriette of France who died early (1727, 1752), the creation requested from the Manufacture de Sèvres of the basin fifteen years after the disappearance of the twins having been a wish of remembrance. The bronze mounting itself is transitional by its design while approaching the decorative vocabulary of Louis XVI, indicating that the work of the haberdasher could also have been committed under Louis XVI.
The equally exceptional and charming quality of the bronze work is a mark of the old regime, for example the rosettes for fixing the basin on the bronze are in flower, the detail of the chasing is such that it can only be seen at the magnifying glass. The finesse of the deep and lively carvings is also a mark of the great century. For the basin, the charm of the soft paste is noticeable among other things by a slight "granite" of color and surface of the celestial blue which later became more uniform on the hard paste.
