Inuit Goggles,Early 20th Century
These goggles are traditionally used by the Inuit and the Yupit, formerly known as the Eskimo, Arctic peoples, to prevent snow blindness. Protective goggles are traditionally made of driftwood (especially spruce), bone, walrus ivory, caribou antler. The glasses fit snugly against the face, so the only light that enters is through the slits. The slits are narrowed not only to reduce light entry, but also to improve visual acuity. These Yupik Snow Goggles are carved from sea bone. They date from the beginning of the 20th century.
