Object description :

"Compiègne Palace - Commodity Chair Louis XV Stamp H Amand"
Beautiful convenience chair (commode or pierced chair) in very finely carved beech, backrest and caned seat. It is fitted with a cushion covered in pink silk (Tassinari and Chatel). In addition to its great finesse of execution and the quality of its lines, our chair presents a royal provenance with the iron marks of the Palace of Compiegne, for the King's buildings, with the hallmark of JME and the stamp of a good carpenter in Henri Amand seats, affixed to the back upright of the backrest. Henri Amand, master in 1749. After settling in rue de Lappe, he moved his workshop to rue de Charenton where his widow maintained the activity from 1757 to 1768. The great signature of this master carpenter in seats (who had worked for a long time as a worker privileged before receiving his master's degree) is among the oldest that can be found on 18th century furniture. The close characters seem to form a whole, frequently - not distinguishing the small dot which separates the H from the A, the furniture of this workshop has long been attributed to an unknown cabinetmaker by the name of Hamand. Specializing in seats, Amand has mainly produced curved chairs with a very noble and very pure line such as the one we present. More rarely, he left his stamp on caned office armchairs, armchairs à la reine carved with cartouches and flowers, elegant sofas decorated with rococo motifs whose happy and beautiful proportions recall the productions of Gourdin or Cresson. Very often he united the legs of his chairs by a brace. Henri Amand's stamp is affixed most of the time to one of the uprights of the backrest, behind the seat. Convenience seats (for toilet use) were placed in the bedrooms of large castles or princely apartments, leaving the servants to empty them in the morning. excellent original condition depth 43cm width 49cm height 92cm seat height 46cm
