Student of William Bougereau and member of the Académie Julian, he was one of the fervent representatives of the Concarneau school. He was the husband of Emmy Leuze-Hirschfeld, also a painter. His works focuses on evening lights and the elements, evoking a melancholic and unruly Brittany.
Signed lower right with an inscription: "To Mr and Mrs Legoût Gerard, fond memories". Fernand Legoût-Gerard, a major figure in the Concarneau school, was a great friend of the couple. This annotation testifies to an intimate work, and its presence in the artist's collection.
