Object description :

"Domenico Tintoretto (1560-1635) Portrait Of A Young Admiralty Officer"
Domenico Tintoretto, also known as Domenico Robusti (born 1560 – died May 17, 1635), was a Venetian painter who grew up under the tutelage of his father, the renowned painter Jacopo Tintoretto. At the age of 17, he became a member of the Venetian painter's guild and, to complete his training, he worked alongside his father by executing paintings at the Doge's Palace in Venice. Domenico then began to work independently in the palace, concentrating his work on historical themes, including intricate arrangements of multiple figures in battle scenes. But throughout his life, Domenico also painted several religious commissions. Among his famous altarpieces we know the “St. George” in San Giorgio Maggiore, “the translation of the body of Saint Mark” exhibited in Venice at the school of San Marco. It is argued that Domenico's greatest contribution to the history of painting lies in his portraiture. Domenico executes the portrait of Margarita of Austria who became Queen of Spain by her marriage to Philip II. Other portraits of illustrious people are added to the list such as the portrait of Duchess Margarita, the widow of Duke Alfonso II of Ferrara, the portrait of Doge Pasquale Cicogna, also that of Doge Marino Grimani as well as that of Marc' Antonio Memmo and Giovanni Bembo, and finally the Count of Aron and Vincenzo I Gonzaga, the 4th Duke of Mantua. Despite the influence he suffered from his father, he succeeded in imposing a personal style by introducing a greater part to the landscape, in the background, as is the case in our portrait.
