Oil on canvas depicting a portrait of a woman wearing a pink dress with a green shawl. Work signed upper left "J Marchand". Good condition. Dimensions: With frame: 67.5 x 55.5 cm At sight: 64 x 53 cm — Jean Hippolyte Marchand (1883-1940) Pupil of Merson, Bonnat and H .Martin. From Cézanne's lesson, he wanted to retain only the method of realistic analysis of matter. Responsible for a mission in Syria, he brought back delicate watercolors. Member of the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Indépendants, he belonged also in the group of Independent Painters-engravers. He has exhibited at the Independent Gallery in London, at the Carnegie Institute, in the USA, in Barcelona, Berlin, Geneva, Vienna, Chicago, New York and Tokyo. At the Colonial exhibition of Vincennes in 1931 he decorated the Pavilion of Syria.He illustrated the Stations of the Cross by P. Claudel, The Serpent and the Marine Cemetery by P.Valéry, Opening of Spring, by F. Jammes, etc. Works by J. Marchand are kept at the Museum of Modern Art, the Albertina in Vienna, the Museums of Algiers, Le Havre, Nantes, the Tate Gallery in London, in Brussels, Chicago and Tokyo.
