Recknagl studied from 1881 at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich. After his studies he occupied himself with genre painting and portrait painting, but also created some landscapes. After 1921, he produced several portraits of Cardinal Michael von Faulhaber. Some of his designs have appeared as artists' postcards. Art prints of his folk portraits (embroidered children, ladies, pipe hunter) are always popular exhibits for folk and historical "peasant rooms". In 1907 a drawing of a female head of study was shown in the monthly magazines of Velhagen & Klasing and a text was written about it. The painting accompanying the study was offered for auction at the end of 2016. Until 1898 Recknagl had his studio at Schellingstraße 114 in Munich's Maxvorstadt for a time, from 1898 at Theresienstraße 75 and around 1900 at Findlingstraße 28. The artists Carl Strathmann, Alexander von Salzmann and Adelbert Niemeyer also had their joint studio at the same address. Around 1903 Recknagl had his workshop at Pettenkoferstraße 28. Around 1936 Recknagl was active in Leipzig. Recknagl signed his photos Th. Recnagl. He was a member of the Reich Association of Fine Artists in Germany and of the Munich Artists' Cooperative.
