"Andreas Schelfhout (attributed To) : "landscape With A City In The Distance""
Andréas Schelfhout (1787-1870) (attributed to): "Landscape with a city in the distance", oil on mahogany panel 21.5 X 31.5 cm, dressed in a superb frame with channels a little to restore 42 X 51cm. What was my surprise, when preparing the enlarged photos of this painting, to see under the fly-striped writing slanted lines of a different color in very slight relief... I went back to see the painting in curling light and with some difficulties deciphering the signature of Andréas Schelfhout which by oxidizing had become more transparent and less readable and suddenly a well-meaning amateur had added some indications which he perhaps knew from family tradition on top of which a situation "London " which is plausible because the Artist visited England in 1834. Even if it is not characteristic of later works, it is on the other hand very close to his drawings, in particular the extreme finesse of the landscape with a foreground animated with characters (some of a few millimeters but perfectly detailed), a slightly plunging perspective presenting a distance with the city illuminated with a gap of light and a characteristic sky of the artist who reinforce our attribution.
