# Rural art is essentially practiced by Berber craftsmen who are daily confronted with problems directly linked to nature with which they have an immediate and complex relationship.
They express their close contact with nature through the creation of rugs that turn out to be beautiful, spontaneous masterpieces. Moreover, rural carpets represent an important repertoire of individual experiences and shared knowledge about the physical reality of nature.
# Urban art is rather based on symmetrical geometries that give rise to shapes that repeat themselves ad infinitum.
They generally take the form of medallions whose center evokes "Al Kaaba" (the tomb of the prophet).
Lines on a rug, for example, suggest the ebb and flow of Muslims engaging in orderly, rhythmic processions invoking God.
Floral motifs, leaves, plants remind Muslims of the promised life in paradise after death.
These various decorative elements emerge from Islamic art and beautifully enliven the surface of Moroccan rugs.
Eighteen colors make up this marvel. Slight wear, old restorations.
# A Zerbiya rug, lot 84, from the Bergé-St Laurent collection sold for €9,920 on 10/31/2015 with a ban on leaving Moroccan territory, this type of rug is considered Moroccan heritage; same for lot 162
# A Zerbiya rug from the 20th century measuring 205 x 320 cm, sold at Artcurial for €104,000 for an estimate of €50/60,000, sale on 30/12/2019
Our model is a superb example of this group and this wonderful knotting work, its beauty, luminous and colorful will transcend your collection.
The field is divided into three divisions.
This carpet offers us an important decoration of arabesque leaves, geometric wavy arabesques. In the center a large decoration of niches in opposition, proves the use of this carpet in a space reserved for prayer, its state shows us that it was present in a place of passage, even if these colors remained very fresh.
Its rare dimensions encourage us to locate this carpet in a mosque or another place of Muslim worship.
This superb old rug from the end of the 19th century needed restoration to restore it to its former glory.
