BING & GRONDAHL - Royal Copenhagen porcelain, between 1915 and 1947. Rare Art Deco Africanist jewelry or candy box attributed to Jaïs Nielsen (ca 1925) for the Danish porcelain factory Bing & Grondahl. Blue decoration in fine bas-relief, representing an African woman with jewelry and a small sign in lush vegetation, all stylized Art Deco. In perfect condition, advice to amateurs... Biography: Johannes Knud Ove Jais-Nielsen (Copenhagen 1885 – 1961) was a Danish painter, designer and ceramist. Nielsen studied painting at the Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler under Kristian Zahrtmann and Johan Rohde. Nielsen made several excursions to important artistic centers, Berlin (1909), Paris (1911-1914) and Italy (1920). Nielsen's art was influenced in Paris by Art Deco including Cubism with a tendency towards Futurism, he tackled a wide range of subjects, as did many avant-garde painters including Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec and Picasso. His work Circus Performance Acrobates (1916) depicts trapeze artists soaring weightlessly through the air. From 1921 to 1928, he was employed as a sculptor by the Royal Copenhagen porcelain factory, for which he notably produced a series of ceramic sculptures. His sculptures were widely acclaimed, and for a time their fame eclipsed that of his paintings. Besides statuettes, Nielsen produced ceramic objects in a wide range of shapes and monochromatic glazes, including celadon. These pots are decorated with figures, mainly in relief but also engraved or painted, the resulting figures have a modeling vigor and a monumental effect that go beyond the boundary between painting and sculpture. Bing & Grøndahl was a Danish porcelain manufacturer, founded in 1853 by the sculptor Frederik Vilhelm Grøndahl, the Meyer brothers Hermann Bing and Jacob Herman Bing. Fanny Garde, Gertrud Vaasegarde, Kaï Nielsen, Jaïs Nielsen, Jean René Gauguin will collaborate there...
