Monumental brasses are one of the most common forms of memorial surviving from the Middle Ages. The majority of extant memorial brasses are found in England, where it is calculated that there may be about 4,000 still remaining in various churches, they are most abundant in the eastern counties. This style of memorial first gained popularity in Britain during the 13th century, and remained in use until well into the 16th century.
