""jockey On Horseback N°1" By Pierre-jules Mêne (1810-1879)"
Bronze sculpture with a very shaded brown patina by
Pierre-Jules Mêne (1810-1879) entitled " Jockey à Cheval N°1 " representing the " Vainqueur du Derby ". Early edition cast, Mêne-Cain workshop, signature P. J. MÊNE on the terrace. According to Mr. Guy Thibault, historian, designer of the Museum of the Race Horse, the horse used as a model for this work would be the winner of the 1862 Epsam Derby, Caractacus. Modeled the year it was sent to the Salon, it was one of the first sculpted representations of a jockey on horseback in the 19th century during the revival of racing under the Second Empire.
