Biography: Delfgaauw Gerardus Johannes (Delfgaauw Gerard) was born on April 2, 1882, in Monster.
He was a Dutch painter of landscapes and townscapes of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Dordrecht, and Delft, among other places. He painted dynamic harbour views of Rotterdam, including the New Amsterdam and the Statendam.
He studied at the The Hague Academy of Fine Arts. Delfgaauw worked in a naturalist-impressionist style.
Since 1914 he lived and worked in Rijswijk.
For a short period of time there are paintings by Delfgaauw which were signed by an art dealer with signature H. van Gessel.
The signature K. Schilderspel or J. van Delden has nothing to do with the work of Delfgaauw. Art historical research has shown that these paintings are completely different in style and technique. These names were used for commercial reasons to sell works that were not made by Delfgaauw.
The painter died on October 21, 1947, in The Hague, Netherlands. Today, his paintings can be found in private and public collections, including in the Amsterdam and Rotterdam Museums.
