"Old Portrait Of A Gentlewoman From The English School Of The Seventeenth Century"
ANCIENT PORTRAIT OF A GENTILWOMAN OF THE 17th CENTURY ENGLISH SCHOOL The work in question depicts a noble woman with a sweet and expressive face holding a rose, dressed in elegant clothes according to the canons of 18th century English fashion, a red coat carmine is placed on the shoulders. The type of painting and the classic pose of the subject attribute this work to the circle of PETER LELY. Sir Peter Lely (Soest, September 14, 1618 - London, November 30, 1680) was a Dutch painter, particularly active in England. Peter was born to Dutch parents as Pieter van der Faes in a town in Westphalia, Soest. His father, an officer, served militarily as Elector of Brandenburg George William. Peter studied the art of painting in the city of Haarlem and had the opportunity to apprentice with the painter Pieter de Grebber. In 1637 he joined the Sint-Lucasgilde guild, which included many other Dutch and Flemish artists such as Rembrandt and van Dyck. It is believed he adopted the surname Lely after seeing a heraldic lily on the pediment of the palace where his father was born near The Hague. Lely arrived in England around 1641. His first paintings, of a religious or mythological nature, were inspired by van Dyck, official painter to Charles I who had died a year earlier, and by Flemish Baroque. In short, Lely also proved to be a good portrait painter; the court and nobility then turned to Lely for an official portrait. In 1647 he joined an association of City of London painters and portrayed Charles I himself; but his great fame did not end with the sovereign's death sentence. Lely also served Oliver Cromwell, the new Lord Protector of England, and later his son Richard. With the fall of the republican regime and with the restoration of Charles II, Stuart became court painter. In 1661, he obtained the privileges that belonged to van Dyck and received 200 pounds a year. In 1662, he was naturalized English. In 1680, after a brilliant career, Lely died leaving behind an important collection of paintings, including works by Paolo Veronese, Titian, Claude Lorrain and Rubens among the most famous. THE WORK WILL BE SHIPPED IN A WOODEN BOX AND WILL BE ACCOMPANIED BY A CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY
