''At the beginning of the year 1857, when Ernest Feydeau and Gustave Flaubert met for the first time, Flaubert was just beginning to be talked about thanks to the publication in the press of Madame Bovary, while Feydeau experienced a success in esteemed as a historian of antiquity for his History of Funeral Usages and the Sepultures of Ancient Peoples, the first volume of which appeared in 1856. The first booklet, devoted to ancient Egypt, earned him a laudatory article by Théophile Gautier, which then solicited his knowledge for the writing of his Roman de la mummy. Haloed by the importance and the seriousness of his research, endowed with a naturally affable character and a high verb which is reminiscent of the eloquence of Gautier or Flaubert, Feydeau binds without difficulty with the two men, first Gautier, then Flaubert, of whom he quickly became one of the closest friends for several years. At the start of their correspondence, Feydeau seemed to enjoy a certain prestige in Flaubert's eyes, but very quickly their relationship evolved and Flaubert asserted himself as a model, half-censor, half-protector, in the face of his addressee.''
