Modern Tibetan rugs have been handcrafted for centuries. Initially, carpet making was considered a minor art, which has grown, endured and found its place among the major arts.
The first stories found on Tibetan carpets report their splendid beauty and the meticulous work of the weavers. Travelers were impressed by such beauties. The social upheavals of our beginning of the modern century have profoundly modified the production of Tibetan carpets. Many aristocratic families organized the production of quality wool carpets. They had to flee to India and Nepal. Production was able to resume during the 1970s.
