Signed by the artist with an A in a circle for Louis Abel and hollow mark of the Rookwood Pottery factory, the RP monogram in the center of the flames. Below the number XXVII in Roman letters for the year 1927 underlined with the form number.
The Rookwood Pottery Company was founded in 1880 by the artist Maria Longworth-Nichols who created a world-renowned ceramic studio in Cincinnati, Ohio that attracted many reputable artists and ceramicists from both the United States and Europe.

Louise Abel (German-American, 1894-1959) ; was born in Widdern Wurttemburg, Germany and came to the U.S. with her parents in 1909. Louise studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy, the Art Students League in New York, The Louis Tiffany Foundation, The Barnes Foundation in Merion, Pennsylvania, The Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, The Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, and the University of Cincinnati College of Liberal Arts. Louise began working for Rookwood in 1919 when she was 25 years old and continued working for Rookwood until 1932. Louise Abel was a native of Widdern, Wurttemberg, Germany and immigrated to the United States in 1909. She was employed by Rookwood from about 1920 to 1932. She returned to Germany in 1959 where she continued producing artwork and sculptures.
