"Large Bronze Representative "
Large bronze representing "David the winner" by Marius Jean Antonin Mercié (1845-1916) with medal patina signed A.Mercié and F. Barbedienne Foundry Paris N°391 with the stamp "Mechanical reduction A. Collas". The hero of the Bible is shown with Goliath's head at his feet, like Donatello's David, he sheathes his sword. Marius Jean Antonin Mercié's "David Vainqueur" illustrates the tendency towards stylistic syncretism which characterized a whole current of 19th century artists, who, breaking away from both neo-classicism and romanticism, turned to the past to draw their inspiration.
