"Bronze With Brown And Golden Patina "
Bronze entitled “Le travail”, signed in two places by the sculptor Victor Rousseau (1865 – 1954). Of Belgian origin, he cut stones from an early age and then participated in the construction of the colossal courthouse in Brussels. Through his various travels, Rousseau was inspired by Art Nouveau in France, Greek in England, and the Renaissance style in Italy. This sculpture represents a blacksmith, with a confident gaze, and prominent hair and beard. He is dressed lightly, with a thick loincloth tied behind his back, revealing a clearly muscular body, highlighted by a golden patina. The man's left hand is leaning on his hip, the right one holds the handle of an imposing hammer, itself resting on an anvil. Behind the legs of the craftsman one distinguishes a notched wheel, and at his feet a pincer. A plaque bearing the name of the work and its author is affixed to the terrace of this bronze, and Rousseau's signature is also present on one of the sides. The whole rests on a square base in sea green marble cut with chamfers. The artist nicknamed "the sculptor of souls" offers us here a tribute to hard work and manual work, which undoubtedly contributed to making this blacksmith a man of assertive virility.
