Sculpture representing the child Buddha Shakyamuni, made of lacquered and gilded wood. His left hand points to the sky, while his right hand points to the earth. Sculptures depicting the Child Buddha were present in Chinese art from the Ming dynasty, as well as in the art of neighboring Vietnam. Shakyamuni Buddha is clad only in a sheath, his left hand pointing skyward and his right hand pointing earthward, in keeping with the tradition of portraying a child. The sculpture has a strong symbolic expression. According to legend, after his birth, Prince Siddartha took seven steps and a lotus flower grew wherever he stepped.
