"Eugene Eckendorf : "mountain Village""
Eugène Eckendorf (early 20th century): "Mountain village", oil on canvas 36 X 50 cm covered with a good flat frame in German gilding 46 X 60 cm uneven around the edge. Oxidized varnish and tiny chips, circa 1920. But who is this Eugène Eckendorf ? For once an artist signs legibly, I find no mention of it in my directories or on the Internet! There was indeed a castle in Alsace that bore this name, but the architecture of the houses reminds me more of the Alps or Switzerland. Still, he had a good brushstroke and above all an unusual sense of light: this composition underlined by the drinking troughs bordered by a channeled stream which leads to a violently lit gap, nevertheless sparing shades in the shadows , to be classic, is no less effective.
