"Fireplace Plate With The Arms Of The Milleton Family (104x 98 Cm)"
18th century fireback, dated 1723, from a private collection in Champlitte in Haute-Saône, bearing the arms of the Milleton family. It gave many priors from 1666 to 1760 to the priories of Soyers and Laferté sur Amance, dating back to the 12th century, attached to the abbey of Saint Pierre and Saint Paul de Luxeuil and canons to the cathedrals of Autun and Langres. These priors were lords of the village and appointed to the cure. The coat of arms is still visible on the lintel of the entrance door to the manor of the priory of Laferté sur Amance erected by Georges Milleton, canon in the cathedral of Autun, commendatory prior of Soyers and Laferté between 1680 and 1700. Jules Claude Ziegler , painter and pupil of Ingres, decorated the dome of the Madeleine church in Paris, a work that allowed him to pass on to posterity, lived in the priory until the end of the 19th century. This plate presents eight Maltese crosses and two turned columns, typically Franche-Comté, around the coat of arms. Our last photo: Armorial d'hozier Champagne, page 465, Georges Milleton, canon in the cathedral church of Autun and commendatory prior of the priory of Saint Pierre de Soyer and Laferté sur Amance. Coat of arms: Azure, a chevron Or, accompanied in chief by two martlets or pigeons Argent and at the base by a bell of the same. Its weight is 199 kg. It should be noted a small foundry defect (hole) in the upper left part.
