Magnificent pair of paintings depicting two of the most fascinating scenes from Greek and Roman mythology. The myth of Diana and Endymion is told in Ovid's "Metamorphosis" and tells the story of Diana, goddess of the hunt and the Moon, and her impossible love for the mortal shepherd boy Endymion. Diana was madly in love with this handsome shepherd and asked her father Zeus to give her eternal youth. Zeus partially satisfies his daughter's demands, but in addition to not aging him, he plunges Endymion into an eternal sleep. It only remained for Diana to go and admire her beloved who was sleeping unconsciously. This myth explained, in ancient times, why, on certain nights, the sky was without a moon: the Goddess in love descended from the sky with her chariot drawn by swans to find her sleeping love. The canvas is masterfully painted and the naked bodies of the two protagonists, arranged horizontally on top of each other, are truly splendid. The Goddess with diaphanous skin and full of sensual femininity, and the handsome Young Man reclining in a languorous and virile pose. Two winged cherubs support Endymion to show him to Diana while two others hover in the sky around the carriage pulled by the swans, from which descended the Goddess. The composition is particularly successful and the nudity of the elegant figures stand out excellently in the setting rich in lights and shadows of the undergrowth of the river. The works are to be attributed to the talented Parmesan master Michele Rocca whose workshop specialized in the creation of historical and mythological paintings that are always very complex and scenographic.
