Ensemble De Cheminée « Les Chevaux De Marly », D’après G. Coustou – Début XXe

Beautiful set of Chimneys in regulates with brown and copper patina, representing the Horses of Marly retained by their Grooms. The original work is a Carrara marble statue, made by Guillaume Coustou (1677-1746), dating from the 18th century, which decorated the drinking troughs of the Château de Marly, it is now on display at the Louvre. This group is composed of two elements and a mechanical rotor clock. We find on the latter a groom taming, from the end of his loin, two horses in a rearing position. The base of the clock is decorated with two female heads at the corners, with a garland at the bottom and scalloping on both sides. The two subjects rest, for their part, on a rectangular base, gadrooned around the edge and decorated with acanthus leaves at the feet. Majestic and charismatic, this mantelpiece, which is based on an emblematic work of France, will delight lovers and collectors of works of art.
