Beautiful soumak shahsavan in kenareh format composed of five medallions surrounded by a multitude of zoomorphs: peacocks, birds, camels, as well as the S* motif which is also found in the borders.
*S: The 'S' motif originally represents a two-headed dragon that could be observed on ancient Persian, Chinese and Celtic bronzes.
Soumak is a wrapped weft (embroidery) weaving technique. On the reverse, the woolen threads are deliberately left. On the old soumaks, these woolen threads made a thickness and had the function of insulation.
The territory of the shahsavans lies south and west of the Caspian Sea, in Iranian Azerbaijan. Made up of Kurdish, Persian, Turkish, Tajik and Caucasian ethnicities, the Shahsavan confederation was formed during the reign of Safavid ruler Shah Abbas (reigned 1587-1629).
