Painted during the 19th century the artist of our painting was inspired by Correggio’s masterpiece from c.1520 held in the Galleria Degli Uffizi, Florence, Italy. The Duke of Mantua Ferdinando Gonzaga gave Grand Duke Cosimo II de'Medici the picture as a present in 1617.
It is celebrated for its beautiful treatment of light and the strong contrast of light or chiaroscuro. Correggio mastered this painting technique and is credited as a forefather. The technique along with Correggio’s sentimental and devotional taste since inspired many painters. The expressive gesture of the Virgin is also characteristic.
