Elegant and refined this oil on cardboard by the great Marseille animal painter Auguste Vimar; The work in good condition is offered in a pretty sober wooden frame with a green patina which measures 41 cm by 33 cm and 33.5 cm by 25 for the painting alone. It represents the portrait of a beautiful horse certainly of English Thoroughbred breed, on the back some pencil sketches representing a dog at rest. The work is signed lower right. Auguste Vimar was born on November 3, 1851 in Marseille. He studied at Lycée Thiers. He is best known for his talents as an illustrator. He illustrated great classics such as La Fontaine's Fables or books by his friends, such as Noah's Ark by Paul Guigou. He also wrote and illustrated children's books himself, such as Le Boy by Marius Bouillabès and L'Automobile Vimar. He collaborated with many newspapers including Le Figaro illustré, Le Rire, Mon journal, Le Journal du dimanche, La Vedette, La Provence Artistique & Picturesque. He influenced Benjamin Rabier.
