Jacques-Joseph Lecurieux was born on August 13, 1801 in Dijon, France. He began his artistic career as an apprentice with a painter, before continuing his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His early works were mainly portraits, but he later turned to genre scenes, landscapes, still lifes and historical compositions. Lecurieux was a prolific and talented artist, who exhibited his works in Parisian and provincial salons. He has also participated in exhibitions abroad, notably in England, Belgium and Germany. Among his best-known works are "Le Curieux ou le Peintre", an oil on canvas preserved in the Museums of Art and History in Geneva, as well as engravings, such as "Avant couru à Chantilly", an eau- forte and drypoint dating from 1867.
