17th or 18th cty
Small wooden carved, polychrome and gilded statue depicting a pieta: the body of Christ fall down on Virgin Mary knees.
Folk art style corresponding to colonial work (Spain or Portugal ?)
The sculptor underlined lines of suffering on Christ and the Virgin Mary faces.
In a very unusual way, a cavity is reserved on the back of the statue in order to place a relic there, which completely confirms its colonial origin, once again marks mixture of Christian european ways of representation and customs and traditions of colonial local cultures.
Very nice patina the statue linked to its repeated and daily use during several centuries, also explaining its polychromy and gilding uses.
