Johan Arsenius was an avid sportsman and mainly painted pictures with horses, cavalry pictures, riding horses and driving horses, but also many portraits. In 1849 he began studying at the Art Academy under Carl Wahlbom and in 1852 made a study trip to Düsseldorf and Paris. In Paris he studied with Horace Vernet and spent the last months there in Höckert's studio. In 1865 he became “Agré” at the Academy of Arts. He resigned from the regiment in 1878. Arsenius is represented at, among others, Uppsala University Library, Örebro County Museum, Västergötland Museum, National Museum in Stockholm, Norrköping Art Museum and Gothenburg Art Museum, Karlsborg Fortress Museum, Nordic Museum, Postal Museum, Bohuslän Museum, Gothenburg City Museum and Helsingborg Museum. Between other works by Arsenius this one sparkles with amazing taste of composition, rapid and confident brushstrokes, outstanding skills in depicting both animals and people - all these can be attributed to a recent visit to Paris and Düsseldorf, a visit to the atelier of masters.
