Biography:
Dutch sculptor, mosaic artist and designer Paul Kingma is best known for his ceramic and stone coffee tables, which are both dark and beautiful.
Born in The Hague in 1931, Kingma studied art in Arnhem before training at the Rijksakademie [academy of fine arts] in Amsterdam and the Royal Academy of Arts in London.
During his career he was commissioned to create a number of sculptures for public spaces in Dutch cities such as Utrecht, Eindhoven and Amersfoort. However, it was in the art of mosaic that he established his reputation, unique stones in his table tops, later incorporating fossils and petrified wood, reminiscent of the work of certain artists such as Ado Chale.
In addition to her furniture design, Kingma also taught sculpture and mosaics at the Institute of Visual Arts in Amersfoort, the Netherlands. Kingma died in 2013 at the age of 81.
