Standing Buddha, carved in solid wood on its lotiform base, Burma (Myanmar), Mandalay period, late 19th / early 20th century. The posture is natural and his serene face shows a slight smile. The intensity of his gaze is particularly, his eyes being made of glass. The wood is lacquered and gilded, richly decorated with inclusions of glass beads or mica (Mineral), the Awakened One holds his monastic robe (uttarasanga) in his left hand. He holds the myrobalan fruit in his right hand, an allusion to the healing power of Buddha. Provenance: Estate of the merchant and collector Claude de Marteau.
