Jacques NAM (1881-1974)

Jacques Lehman , known as Jacques Nam , was a French draughtsman , engraver , painter and sculptor , born in Paris on September 11, 1881 .
He is particularly renowned for his animal works .

Born into a family of musicians , Jacques Nam began sketching his parents' cat in his notebooks at an early age .
In 1898 , Jacques Nam became a student at the fine arts of Paris , and entered the studio of Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904) , a renowned French painter and sculptor .
There , he developed a reputation for painting animals , especially felines . For this purpose , he went to the Antwerp Zoological Gardens in 1914 , where he brought back studies of felines , birds and reptiles .

He produced cartoons for "Le Rire" , "Le Sourire" , "Le Bon Vivant" , "La Vie Parisienne" , "La Baïonnette" .
In "Le Figaro" , "La Liberté" , and "L'Echo of Paris" , he caricatured political life .
At "Hachette" , "Flammarion" , "Delagrave" , we discover his talent as an illustrator . He illustrated Colette's the "seven beast dialogues". A long friendship ensued.
He also illustrated Mirbeau's "Dingo", Farrère's "The civilized", Maupassant's "Our heart" and many others .

While working for publishers , he devoted himself to painting , especially animals , and to studying new techniques .
He began working with lacquer , creating screens , decorative panels and interior decorations on commission .
Naturally , he turned to sculpture .
Cats are his favorite models , some of which are reproduced by the Manufacture of Sevres and Quimper .

In 1970 , he was awarded the "Grammont Price" for an action in favor of the animal world .
In 1971 , at the age of 90 , he took part in an exhibition in London with Theophile Alexandre STEINLEN on the theme of the "CAT" .
A totally eclectic artist , he was a painter , sculptor , illustrator and lacquerer , but is best known for his animal drawings , paintings and sculptures .
In the course of his life , Jacques Nam rubbed shoulders with numerous artists , men of letters and political figures .
Among his friends were Jean COCTEAU , Paul LEAUTAUD , Dr MERY , Jean CASSOU and many others .
Jacques NAM died in his studio in rue Nicolo , Paris, on February 22 , 1974 , at the age of 93 .
