He began at the Salon of 1880 and obtained an honorable medal in 1886, third class medal in 1888, bronze medal in 1889 and in 1900 at the Universal Exhibition and knight of the Legion of Honor.
Alfred Smith adopted several styles during his career. He is known first and foremost for his mastery of atmospheric effects with his Bordeaux landscapes. Like many of his contemporaries, he loved painting outdoors, which earned him the nickname “the painter of the undergrowth”.
After a visit to Venice he adopted a rather impressionist style and from 1912, he evolved towards fauvism
