In this first third of the 17th century the artist offers us an animal scene in a landscape. Under the presidency of the red cardinal, the emblematic bird, a monkey and many birds are brought together.

Gillis Claesz de Hondecoeter (1575-1638)

Gillis Claesz. de Hondecoeter or d'Hondecoeter (Mechelen, ca. 1575 – Amsterdam, buried October 17, 1638) is a painter from the southern Netherlands. He is the father of the painter Gijsbert de Hondecoeter, the father-in-law of Jan Baptist Weenix and the grandfather of the famous Jan Weenix and Melchior de Hondecoeter. The painting of poultry and game, popularized by him, became a popular and successful subject of his painter grandchildren. Gillis Claesz. de Hondecoeter painted fantastical landscapes in the Flemish tradition, often with a religious motif. Initially in the style of Gillis van Coninxloo, but later more in the manner of Roelant Savery. The religious motif, still central in the Middle Ages, moved more and more towards the periphery. His landscapes became more and more Dutch and he had a great preference for the representation of birds and animals. He leaves the painting of the figures to David Vinckboons, also Malinois.
