I offer you here an exceptional panel, certainly imbued with faith and religiosity, but made of straw MISE EN RELIEF, and framed under glass (old glass), in the style of a Diorama....
Dutch work from the second half of the 19th century.
The patterns, cut out on previously dried strands of golden straw, were laminated on thin paper before being shaped using small wooden or cork wedges...
Various flowers, roses, lilies and buds, leafy branches, ears of wheat, bunches of grapes and vine shoots, ribbon knots, Holy Chalice and Sacred Heart thus blossom in 3 dimensions!..
A Navy anchor, a Latin cross, and the text "praise to Jesus Christ" in Dutch complete this painting with the same delicacy and finesse of execution.
Ex-voto, thanks after shipwreck, or nun's work..., nothing is certain concerning the origin of this work, except the hundreds of hours of patience and attention necessary for the realization of this original and unique piece.
An old label on the back bears several dates in pencil: 23 / 2 / 91 for 1891, and: restored on 28 - 12 -...8...
