He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he received instruction from Flammeng and Ferrier. He won the Grand Prix de Rome (1920), the silver medal at the Salon des Artistes Français (of which he was a member), and the Prix de Robert de Rougé. Having become one of the most prolific illustrators of the period 1920-1950 (with nearly a hundred works), he distinguished himself with his erotic "drypoint" engravings. The authors he illustrated included Voltaire, Diderot, Pierre Louÿs, Baudelaire, Piron, Verlaine, Géraldy and Brantôme.
