England, circa 1787

Rare oblong plate or medallion in sage-colored jasperware representing a “Peace offering”. Luxurious Restauration-period stuccoed and gilded wood frame.

A perfectly documented model
Lady Elisabeth Templetown is credited with the refined, feminine design of this medallion. It was taken from the factory's 1787 catalog, and Hackwood was entrusted with its production. This work illustrates the business acumen of Joshua Wedgwood, who used the design of one of his aristocratic customers to market the finished model to the same social class. He called on the talents of Baroness Templetown repeatedly between 1783 and the very end of the 18th century. She is mentioned in glowing terms in the Manufacture's 1787 catalog.

Provenance: Macips family since the 1840s, then by descent.
