At seventeen, he entered the National School of Decorative Arts. The war interrupted his studies and he joined North Africa to enlist. When American troops arrived, his skills in English allowed him to become a liaison agent between the French Army and the American OSS. After the conflict, Charles Levier decided not to resume his studies and set up his studio in the USA, while maintaining close ties with France. His first solo exhibition took place in Lyon, in the Constantine gallery, two years later.
