Joseph-René Verdier (Parcé-sur-Sarthe 1819 - Saint-Gervais 1904) Landscape and animal painter, Joseph-René Verdier, exhibited his paintings at the Salon in Paris, between 1845 and 1878. He won a silver medal at the Universal Exhibition in Le Mans in 1880. Owning a property in Loir-et-Cher at Cour-Cheverny, he welcomed Rosa Bonheur (1822-1899), the famous animal painter of whom he was a friend and student. Verdier was president of the Society of Friends of the Arts of Loir-et-Cher, which he founded in 1885 with other regional artists. He often painted with his son Jean-Louis Verdier (1849-1895) during shared stays. He created forest landscapes of Sologne, which he exhibited at the Salon from 1845 to 1878. Verdier also painted landscapes of Brittany, Normandy, and the Creuse region.
