- slight creases in the upper and lower margin, otherwise in very good condition
- The Ebbing of the Tears -
The gaunt woman in the painting wears a mourning shawl and gazes into an indeterminate distance. The bony nose in particular gives the physiognomy an emaciated character. She is holding a watering can almost tenderly, which lends a surreal quality to the scene, especially since it has a capacity of three liters. Symbolically, the watering can represents prosperity and cultivation, which are absent here. The mourner has obviously lost her child, so the watering can also becomes a symbol of her tearful grief.
