Excellent quality and condition, representing the work of the famous Impressionist painter who traveled throughout Australia and New Zealand, painting his early accounts of landscapes and coastal views. Presented in its original gilt frame. Signed. Dimensions: 102 x 81 cm approximately (framed) Provenance: Single-parent family, acquired directly from the artist Biography Buckmaster was apprenticed to James Beament, a sign painter and amateur artist, in 1913. He then studied with Bernard Hall and WB McInnes at the National Gallery Art School in Melbourne from 1918 to 1924. While still a student, he began exhibiting with the Victorian Artists Society. In 1928, he was commissioned to paint a posthumous portrait of Adam Lindsay Gordon for the Commonwealth Historic Memorials Committee. Many important commissions followed, and his works attracted increasing interest. In 1945, he was appointed an official war artist and sent to Singapore to document the Japanese surrender. Buckmaster was particularly sensitive to the fluctuations of light on the landscape depending on the time of day and the season. He also painted water and river landscapes.
