SAÜL, King of Israel, frightened at the gathering of the Philistine army, which David joined, questions the priests and the prophets on the intentions of God. Having received no answer, Saul turned to the occult sciences which he himself had proscribed after the death of Samuel. So his advisers make him meet a witch from the village of Endor, able to get in touch with the dead. At Saul's request, the necromancer calls Samuel, the late great judge of Israel. Saul prostrates before the ghost of Samuel, whom he does not see, pleads the urgency of the danger and reiterates his abandonment by God. Samuel does not give him any advice, but announces his future defeat and the decay of his dynasty. Saul will perish with his sons the next day at the Battle of Gelboe. Book I. Samuel, chapter XXVIII, 3-25.
