"17th Century Engraved Iron Snuff Box"
Beautiful snuff box from the end of the 17th century - beginning of the 18th century in engraved iron. This modest-looking box is nevertheless rather rare to find. Rectangular in shape with cut angles, the slightly domed lid. Opening on hinge and by push button which activates a leaf spring inside; works perfectly The cover is finely engraved with a leaf, perhaps the representation of a tobacco leaf ... It is stamped inside (see photo). I could not decipher these marks; but these are undoubtedly the origin of the manufacturer. Most engraved or damascened tin boxes originate from Germany. Beautiful general patina of the metal. The edges of the cover are very thin, almost sharp, here time and use have worked. A bit of history: Molière called these boxes "small tabachic attic". They were often called at that time: snuffbox. Note: very nice work on the hinge; a technical feat
