Charles Ferdinand Semain is the son of Philippe Sermain, decorator of Kortrijk and his wife Anna Gheysens, a seamstress born in Oudenaarde and living in Harelbeke where they married. The couple, in 1829, some time after their marriage, settled in Tielt. It was there that their union was born, between 1830 and 1848, nine children: Carolus (June 26, 1830-July 11, 1830), Carolus Ferdinandus (May 31, 1831), Clementina (September 27, 1833), Juliana Sophia (August 28, 1835), Eduardus Didier (September 14, 1837), Maria Ludovica (August 19, 1839), Victorina (October 28, 1839) 841-Saint-Gilles, 1907), Octavia (November 26, 1844) and Leonard (April 3, 1848). He entered the newly founded Tielt Academy of Fine Arts in 1844-1845 and perfected his talent for drawing. The family moved on November 6, 1849 and settled in Brussels where he entered the studio of the animal painter Eugène Verboeckhoven (1798-1881). He resided at 56 rue des Pierres in Brussels in 1856. He lived in Beauvais, where he met Clémentine George, a seamstress whose parents settled in Paris gave their consent to the marriage of their daughter with Charles Ferdinand on June 21, 1858. The young couple changed frequently. On March 19, 1870, they lived at 49 rue Capouillet in Saint-Gilles. There is no trace of his wife until his death in Paris in 1905. He moved to Barbizon in the fall of 1872 in the studio of Narcisse Diaz de la Peña (1807-1876). It is from this moment that he takes the pseudonym of “Ceramano”. Other Belgian painters preceded him in Barbizon like Gustave de Jonghe and Camille Van Camp, received at the Ganne inn, or Alfred de Knyff, pupil of Théodore Rousseau. We also saw Adriaan Joseph Heymans, Joseph Coosemans, François Lamorinière and Victor Papeleu there. In Barbizon, he painted animals and landscapes, then composed pastoral scenes with sheep and sheepfolds. His work is influenced by that of Charles Jacque, whom he admires. Its first participation in the Salon will be a success. There he sold his painting Edge of the forest to an art lover from Chicago. Joseph Bula, art broker, made him known in the United States where he was a great success. In 1878, he bought a small house which he named “Vertefeuille” in the Grande rue de Barbizon. In the population census of 1881, he lives with Marie Jeanne Rosalie Van Eeckhout, the sister of his witness at his first marriage, as well as a boy and a girl. In 1885, his address in Paris was at no. 126 rue La Fayette. He settled around 1888 in the Vaux de Cernay, about twenty kilometers south of Versailles. His friend the painter Léon Germain Pelouse had a studio there made available to him by the Rothschild family. He painted many paintings there. He lived near the Hotel des Cascades (Léopold house) and paid visits to the Cottin farm. Ceramano returned to Barbizon1 in 1896. An article in L'Événement of November 2, 1891 describes him as follows: "The head of a God the Father painted by Rembrandt, the contrast of his brightly colored face with his long curly snow-white hair and his beard which shines in the Sun. On October 1, 1905, his wife, from whom he had been separated for a long time, died in her home at 13 rue Philippe-de-Girard in Paris. On June 9, 1906, aged 75, he married his companion Jeanne Rosalie Van Eeckhout, aged 63, with whom he had lived for over thirty years. He gave a pension to Henri Pontoy (1888-1968), a young painter from Reims, as well as a housekeeper. He died on April 22, 1909 in Barbizon2,3. His wife died on February 26, 1913 in the Villa Stelle at 16 avenue de Borriglione in Nice. She is buried with him in Barbizon.
